Prodromos Ververeli, M.D., Chief, Division of Orthopedics

“We have a subspecialty model that helps push surgical innovation and bring the latest technology to patients.”

Prody VervereliThe first fellowship-trained joint replacement surgeon in the Lehigh Valley, Ververeli now leads a division with a wealth of subspecialty experience and the fourth highest surgical volume in the state. Dozens of orthopedic surgeons are fellowship trained in specialties that include joint replacement, spine, shoulder, hand and wrist, foot and ankle, sports medicine and pediatric orthopedics.

"This subspecialty model helps push surgical innovation and brings the latest technology to patients, most notably minimally invasive techniques that accelerate the rehabilitation process and facilitate an earlier return to work and regular activities," Ververeli says.

For his specialty, Ververeli offers the latest technology to improve the wear and fixation of hip and knee replacements, including alternative bearing implants such as highly cross-linked polyethylene and metal-on-metal hip replacement. He also has used computer navigation in knee replacement, two-incision hip replacement and quad sparing knee replacement.

"Our other specialists also are using the very latest techniques, including spinal disk replacement and foot and ankle surgeries, including ankle replacements," he says. "We have a Division of Hand Surgery that is emerging as a center of excellence in the most advanced surgical and non-surgical treatments. We can do any type of surgery at the highest level."

Along the specialty model has come tremendous growth in volume, Ververeli says. "Lehigh Valley Health Network has accommodated this volume with leading-edge technology in operating rooms, a streamlined, more efficient bed management system and a Transfer Center that enables us to speak with referring physicians about the transfer. It's an environment that supports innovation."
