Region’s Most Experienced Trauma Center
We’re the region’s largest Level 1 Trauma Center for adults and provide the highest level of trauma care for children
What makes Lehigh Valley Health Network a Level I Trauma Center - the highest possible designation - with Level II pediatric accreditation – the highest level of trauma care for children? We are the most experienced trauma center in the region, caring for about 4,500 trauma patients every year.
Our Trauma Center is the only one in the region with a Level II pediatric accreditation. We have this higher level of expertise in treating children because we have:
- The area’s only pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), providing the highest level of care for severely injured children
- A Regional Burn Center providing specialized care for children and adults
- The area’s only pediatric surgeons
- Rehabilitation programs specially designed for children recovering from trauma or burn injuries
- The area’s only child-life program to helps children and families cope emotionally and feel comfortable during their hospitalization
Our health network also is at the forefront of recognizing the unique needs of older patients who experience a traumatic injury. Out of the 4,500 trauma patients we treat annually, 25 percent are age 65 and older. This gives us the experience needed to provide the best possible care.
Our first-of-its-kind geriatric trauma program includes a team of experts who meet weekly to discuss each patient’s needs. The team includes a geriatrician or patient’s primary care physician, trauma surgeon, physician assistant, pharmacist, case manager, physical and occupational therapist, clinical dietitian and chaplain. Plus, educational conferences and research projects ensure our caregivers learn the latest information about caring for older patients who suffer a traumatic injury.
