Area’s Only Pediatric Surgeons
If your child needs surgery, you don’t have to travel far from home. Our pediatric surgeons—the only ones in the area—can treat many conditions with minimally invasive surgeries for faster recovery and less scarring.
When your child needs surgery, turn to Lehigh Valley Health Network. We have three experienced pediatric surgeons who are the only ones in the area. They provide high-quality pediatric surgery close to home.
The trio specializes in the surgical care of infants and children, including newborns with congenital birth anomalies and children with cancer, burns or injuries from trauma. Our pediatric surgeons perform a variety of surgical procedures including:
- Appendectomies
- Pyloromyotomies
- Cholecystectomies
- Splenectomies
- Hernia repairs
- Circumcisions
Advanced pediatric surgical procedures available include:
- Nuss repair in children with pectus excavatum
- Thoracoscopic and laparoscopic approaches to abdominal and thoracic surgery
- The single-stage endorectal pull-through for infants and children diagnosed with Hirschsprung's disease
We also have surgeons who perform:
- Plastic surgery including cleft lip and cleft palate, jaw and ear deformities and birthmarks
- Ear, nose and throat surgery including ear tubes, tonsils and adenoids and nasal deformities
- Orthopedic surgery including heel cord lengthening and repairing fractures
To prepare for surgery, your child will require general anesthesia. Preparing a child for anesthesia requires special skills and understanding of a child’s unique body. Our pediatric anesthesiologist, the only one in the region, specializes in identifying and safely relieving a child’s pain before, during and after surgery. He can do this with medication and techniques used to distract a child’s attention away from his treatment.
The minimally invasive approach is now routinely used for many surgeries, so children recover faster and have less scarring. The team is assisted by the area's only pediatric anesthesiologists who identify and safely relieve children's pain before, during and after surgery.
To help your child feel comfortable, surgery for infants and children up to 16 years is performed in a child-friendly environment, the pediatric ambulatory surgery unit. It is specially designed with children, adolescents and parents in mind. It includes:
- A children’s play area
- An entertainment system with video games, television and DVDs
- A large waiting room with complimentary tea, coffee and crackers
- A pre-surgery area where your child can continue to play while our team begins his sedation
- A post-surgery recovery area with rooms designed for extra privacy
