Philosophy of care

The most important part of providing health care to patients is ‘taking care of their health.’ I view health ‘holistically.’ It’s a state of wellbeing that doesn’t just involve physical health but an interweaving of many other factors. Family, work, relationships, nutrition, exercise and social interactions all play an important role in maintaining a state of wellness. As a family physician I view my patients as individuals, each with a unique background and life experiences. My job is to listen, and not just to what patients say but also to what they don’t say. So much is left unspoken in a doctor-patient interaction. By keeping my eyes, ears and mind open, I’m able to get so much more out of the visit, and so do my patients. I’m often amazed at how much I learn during even a short visit, and how quickly my patients and I develop strong long-term bonds of trust. This is very important in addition to the medical knowledge and skills I use to my interactions with patients.

Why I entered medicine

I grew up in India, and as a child I was fascinated by my family doctor who made house calls when I was sick with fevers and other common illnesses. Over the years, I saw him care for many of my family members. He was the epitome of kindness, compassion and love – someone I truly wanted to emulate. The best part of his visits was when he convinced my mother to give me chocolate. He knew just how to make sick children happy, and I dreamed of being like him. When I reflect back, I give my father credit for enthusiastically supporting my decision to become a doctor. He was a tremendous force in my life. But I realize my childhood doctor also played a powerful role.

Community involvement

Growing up in India, I saw poverty in communities all around me, and I felt deeply about caring for people who were not as fortunate as me. Communities were very close-knit in those days, and people took care of each other. I truly believe that we can improve health care in this country by bringing communities together in a spirit of mutual support. I do what I can to help. For more than 15 years I’ve worked to improve health care for people with disabilities, coordinating closely with many advocacy groups. I’ve served on the board of the Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living and am currently on the board of The Arc of Lehigh and Northampton Counties. I’m also passionate about helping educate the next generation of community-minded doctors. I’ve given presentations at elementary schools on career days, judged school science competitions, and spoken to students at Lehigh University and Istanbul University in Turkey. One of my favorite community projects is a program I lead for medical students and residents, which allows them to travel to Kolkata, India for a month and serve people in extremely under-resourced and underprivileged areas. I’ve also been honored to receive many community awards, including the Lehigh Valley Business Healthcare Heroes award for education, Dr. Mark Young Award for Service Excellence, Allen D. Deibler Advocacy Award, and the LVHN Medical Staff Award for Service Excellence.

Personal interests

I’ve lived in the Lehigh Valley for almost 30 years. My husband (a professor at Lehigh University) and I raised our two daughters here, and we enjoy everything the Valley has to offer. In my spare time, I love gardening as it makes me feel at one with nature. My mind is free to wander, helping me gain new perspectives on things and often inspiring a flood of new ideas. I also enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds, both here in the US and overseas when I have a chance to travel. I believe this is the best way to learn cultural humility and empathy, and helps me see my patients as they view themselves.
