Vascular Rehabilitation
If you experience pain when walking because of peripheral arterial disease, our Vascular Rehabilitation Program will get you moving again. This outpatient program incorporates exercise, rehabilitation and education. Here’s how it works:
- One-hour exercise sessions are held two times a week for 12 weeks or until independence is achieved.
- When you begin the program, a treadmill test will determine how fast and how long you are able to walk.
- As you progress, 5 minutes will be added to your initial test until you are able to walk 50 minutes without pain.
While you’re walking, your heart rate and blood pressure will be closely monitored. Our staff is specially educated to maintain your safety. You also are encouraged to stay active at home. You’ll be given a pedometer to measure the distance you walk and diary to log your progress.
Educational sessions also are available. You’ll learn to quit smoking, lower blood pressure, control diabetes, eat healthy, exercise and lose weight. A handbook will help you understand and manage PAD.
