Fellowship Background and Objectives

Lehigh ValleyHealth Network’s (LVHN) Administrative Fellowship is a two-year program designed to provide an educational environment and an experience that will contribute to your growth and development as a quality health care professional. You’ll gain exposure to clinical and operational departments, providing an opportunity to apply knowledge, skills and abilities learned in the classroom, in a practical work setting while gaining real management experience.

Program Structure

The LVHN Fellowship is a two-year program, with the first year dedicated to core rotations with senior leaders across departments. The fellow will also have the opportunity to work on key network projects and have significant exposure to senior-level meetings.

Year 1
The fellow will gain hands-on experience on numerous projects throughout the rotations and vast exposure to various aspects of hospital administration. Core rotations include, but are not limited to:

  • General Operations: Explore areas of clinical and administrative operations including emergency preparedness, support services, and practice groups.
  • Human Resources:Gain exposure to recruitment, employee relations, training, compensation and benefits administration, employment policies and procedures and salary and wage administration.
  • Patient Care Services: Understand nursing operations and administration in the areas of workflow, staffing and scheduling, case management and medical records.
  • Clinical & Service Line Operations:Develop a comprehensive understanding of medical staff responsibilities and all clinical aspects of a hospital including an overview of service lines, physician relations, business development and process improvement.Exposure to specific rotations with service lines such as perioperative, oncology, orthopedics, trauma and burn, neurosciences, and heart and vascular are included.
  • Ambulatory Operations: Engage in the ever-expanding world of ambulatory services development including patient access, strategic business planning, and operational oversight of health centers, sleep centers, rehabilitation services, and retail pharmacies.
  • Facilities, Planning and Construction: Work with senior planners on construction and business plan development, healthcare design and planning on various projects.
  • Supply Chain Management: Discover the integrated nature of hospital supply and materials management, contracts, product purchasing and distribution services.

Other areas of exploration include: General management, network and business development, organizational development and Lean processes, finance, strategic planning, marketing and information services and technology.

Year 2
The second year of the programs offers flexibility to concentrate in areas of interest and take on more specific projects pertaining to your goals and desired career path. Fellows gain project management experience. Past fellows have taken on project management roles within business development, telehealth technologies, process improvement, and patient-centered care experiences.

Mentorship

The program director will serve as the primary supervisor and teacher throughout your entire fellowship. Additionally, through each core rotation, the fellow will be matched with senior leadership mentors who will assign meaningful and relevant projects while guiding you through project completion. Mentors will:

  • Help you clarify goals and objectives
  • Create a supportive learning environment
  • Identify educational projects and tasks
  • Assign reading materials to further enhance the learning process
  • Assure your learning goals are met

Compensation

You’ll be hired as a full-time employee for a two-year period and will be paid an annual salary comparable to other Administrative Fellowship programs across the nation. You’ll receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental and vision. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to attend relevant national and regional health care leadership conferences.


Application Process

Candidates should have a master’s degree in health care administration, business administration, public health or other related field from an accredited program.

Selection Process

  • Phone interviews will be conducted in mid October
  • On-site interviews will be conducted in early November
  • Offers will be extended by December 1
  • Employment begins on or about July 1
