Advanced Regional Burn Center

Located inside the Kasych Family Pavilion at Lehigh Valley Hospital—Cedar Crest, our new 18-bed facility is twice the size of its former location, meaning more beds are available for patients with burn injuries.

The expanded location allows the Regional Burn Center to care for as many as 1,100 patients annually. “We are committed to admitting every patient who needs to be admitted,” says Daniel Lozano, M.D., chief, division of burn at Lehigh Valley Health Network.

The Regional Burn Center is the only one in the area with a full-time medical staff that’s completely devoted to burn care. The center also is accredited in pediatric, burn and trauma care. Among the services offered:

  • Referring physician and hospital calls go directly to a burn physician
  • Twenty-hour family presence in recognition of the impact loves ones have on a patient’s outcome
  • Comprehensive scar management program offering the latest techniques to limit cosmetic and functional disabilities
  • Image enhancement center offering tattooing and instruction on makeup techniques for burned skin
  • Outpatient services in the Burn Recovery Center include burn care, rehabilitation and psychosocial care. “Many procedures that used to require admission now can be performed on an outpatient basis,” Lozano says.

Some of the state-of-the-art features of the new Regional Burn Center include:

  • HEPA filter system to filter particles and help reduce infections
  • Blinds embedded in the window panes to eliminate the need for curtains that can hold bacteria
  • Antifungal paints and wallpaper glues
  • Air flow, humidity and heat requirements individually controlled in each patient room for greater patient comfort
  • Larger, all-private patient rooms with full-size bathrooms with seated showers, a patient lift system, supplies at the bedside and keycard-accessible medication drawers for faster access
  • Two treatment rooms with 360-degree access to patient for greater patient comfort

The Regional Burn Center is one of the nation's most advanced burn centers, and is one of 44 burn centers nationwide verified by the American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons. To receive this designation, a burn center must meet rigorous organizational structure, personnel qualifications, facilities resources and medical services as outlined by the ABA.
