A Resource for School Nurses

June 25th, 2010 by Matthew Burns

ASD-Telehealth(web)Karen S. Angello, outgoing superintendent of the Allentown School District, recently flipped the switch for the “Pilot within the Pilot” telehealth program at Central Elementary School. Angello was greeted by (l-r) Lehigh Valley Health Network pediatrician Jarret Patton, M.D., and the health network’s chief medical officer, Ron Swinfard, M.D., through a live, high-definition video feed from Lehigh Valley Hospital—17th Street. Thanks to a grant from the Dorothy Rider Pool Trust, students returning to Cleveland, McKinley and Central elementary schools this fall will have access to a “virtual doc.” Using telehealth technology, if a student becomes ill during school hours, the school nurse can “call” a physician in the pediatric clinic.
