Karen S. Angello, outgoing superintendent of the Allentown School District, recently flipped the switch for the “Pilot within the Pilot� telehealth program at Central Elementary School. Angello was greeted by (l-r) Lehigh Valley Health Network pediatrician Jarret Patton, M.D., and the health network’s chief medical officer, Ron Swinfard, M.D., through a live, high-definition video feed from Lehigh Valley Hospital—17^th Street. Thanks to a grant from the Dorothy Rider Pool Trust, students returning to Cleveland, McKinley and Central elementary schools this fall will have access to a “virtual doc.� Using telehealth technology, if a student becomes ill during school hours, the school nurse can “call� a physician in the pediatric clinic.
