Department of Medicine Information

The Internal Medicine Residency program at LVHN allows you to gain experience within one of the largest hospitals in Pennsylvania. The Department of Medicine has a long tradition of providing national leadership in graduate medical education. We have a dedicated leadership team that is continuously working on ways to improve the curriculum and content of our program. These efforts are whole-heartedly supported by Department and Network leadership, as reflected by our fellowship growth over the past several years. It is also well reflected by our efforts in innovative curriculum delivery.

By working with the Institute for Health Care Improvement, we’ve created an Exemplary Care and Learning Site. This is a floor of our hospital where all patients are cared for by one of two teaching teams. Our learners are embedded on the floor and thereby own the quality metrics of the unit. It also affords the opportunity for our learners to build collaborative relationships with our nursing colleagues, case managers and support staff to develop a true understanding of systems-based practice and how to work on a healthcare team.

Our program was one of the first in the country to pilot and adopt an x + y scheduling system for our ambulatory curriculum. Our 4 + 1 scheduling model has helped re-imagine how ambulatory care is taught and delivered to internal medicine residents nationwide. Our residents rotate on a core rotation (for example, rheumatology or critical care) for four weeks uninterrupted. This four-week block is both preceded and followed It is then followed by a one-week rotation at our resident clinic. This 4 + 1 pattern lends itself to focused practice and has helped us better showcase the benefits of continuity clinic and primary care practice.

At LVHN, you will find a dedicated group of teaching physicians who offer a balanced, high-quality experience in both outpatient primary care and inpatient secondary care settings. You’ll be exposed to patients, problems and research activities under the guidance of committed, well-qualified internists and specialists.

With a focus on patient care and resident training, you will find great opportunities for clinical research. You will also gain experience in activities that emphasize disease prevention, quality improvement and community health. Our Department, has a robust team of study coordinators, biostatisticians and physician researchers. All of whom help facilitate opportunities to submit abstracts and papers for publication and presentation in scientific forums through the country.

Outside of the hospital, residents enjoy life in the pleasant and affordable environment of the Lehigh Valley. All in all, the LVHN's Internal Medicine Residency program provides superior training in a practical and relaxed location.
