Learning Experiences

Pharmacy residents are required to complete the following:

Core (required) learning experiences – 5 weeks (unless otherwise noted)

  • Orientation – 6 weeks
  • Administration
  • Critical care 
  • Infectious diseases (adult- or pediatric-focused)
  • Internal medicine
  • Pediatrics

The resident will also be scheduled for two transitional administrative experiences (2 weeks each) during January and March to facilitate progress related to the required research project and other residency-related tasks.

Elective learning experiences – 5 weeks

Each resident will be able to choose three elective learning experiences for the residency year. Elective learning experiences will be scheduled based on preceptor availability.

  • Cardiology
  • Critical care II (burn, medicine, surgery and trauma)
  • Emergency medicine
  • Infectious diseases II
  • Oncology
  • Pediatric critical care
  • Pediatric oncology/infectious diseases
  • Solid organ transplant

Longitudinal experiences – (12 months unless otherwise noted)

Longitudinal Experience Resident Commitment Resident Activities
Ambulatory Care 4 hours every Thursday afternoon for 6 months – alternating with Drug Shortage Facilitation Complete comprehensive medication reviews, update the medication list, perform necessary patient follow-up, complete timely documentation
Clinical Staffing 20 hours averaged over 4 weeks [1 weekend (16 hours) + 1 evening (4 hours)] and one hospital-recognized holiday Centralized and decentralized distributive and clinical responsibilities are incorporated within the experience
Drug Shortage Facilitation Residents will be paired and spend 6 months leading weekly Drug Shortage meeting and subsequent communications alternating with Ambulatory Care Lead weekly meetings and maintain communication with staff regarding current shortages and potential impact on clinical care

Prepare and present three monographs or drug class reviews at Therapeutics meetings
Formulary Management Attendance of Pharmacy Clinical Collaborative Committee and Therapeutics Committee meetings throughout the residency year as scheduled Prepare and present three monographs or drug class reviews to Therapeutics Committee
Presentation Skills Various presentations are assigned throughout the residency year
  • Journal Clubs (1)
  • Clinical pearls (2)
  • Case-based lecture to family medicine residents
  • ACPE presentation to pharmacy staff (at least 30 minutes in length)
  • ACPE preceptor development pearl (at least 15 minutes in length)
  • Medication use evaluation (MUE) presented in poster format at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting (or similar conference) – project timeline provided
  • MUE presented to Therapeutics Committee
Research Assume responsibility as principal investigator of a research project
  • Project timeline provided
  • Research project presented as podium presentation (preferred) at Eastern States Residency Conference (or similar regional conference)
  • Prepare manuscript acceptable for publication
Teaching Certificate Program 1-hour weekly group discussions scheduled between September and May
  • Independent review of modules within the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy Teaching and Learning Certificate Program
  • Participation in module activities
  • Completion of activity evaluations
  • Attendance and/or facilitation of group discussions of module material according to the provided schedule
