What is an Accountable Care Organization?

An Accountable Care Organization (ACO) is a group of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers working together with Medicare to provide high-quality, coordinated care. The goal of coordinated care is to ensure patients get the right care at the right time and to reduce duplication of services. When high-quality care is delivered, health care dollars are spent more wisely and money can be saved. If money is saved, the ACO may share in the savings it achieves.

How ACOs Were Formed

The Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations (MSSP ACOs) were formed as a result of the Affordable Care Act which was signed into law in 2010. The goal is to promote accountability for the Medicare beneficiaries that are assigned to the ACO. This is done through care coordination, investing in infrastructure and redesigning care processes to provide high-quality and efficient care, and incenting higher-value care. The ACO brings groups of doctors and other health care professionals together to provide high-quality care for patients.
