Tara Morrison, MDTara Morrison, MD is a fellowship-trained neuro-oncologist. In this video, she provides an explanation of what a neuro-oncologist is and her role in the treatment of brain cancer and other cancer treatments that may impact the central nervous system.

Cancer of the brain results when cancer cells originate in brain tissue. There are many types of cancer that can form in your brain. The type of brain cancer a person has depends on which cells have become cancerous. If your doctor suspects a tumor in your brain or spinal cord, you will require immediate diagnosis and treatment.

At Lehigh Valley Health Network, we use a multidisciplinary team approach to brain cancer. The neuro-oncology team at our Cancer Centers at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest and Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg includes specialists in neurosurgery, neurology, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, pathology and psychiatry. This multidisciplinary team is skilled in quickly and precisely identifying the location and type of tumor and determining the best treatment for you.

This means that whether you’re being diagnosed for the first time or looking for a second opinion, you will see an entire team of specialists in the same day. Team members will review every aspect of your case and offer the best treatment recommendation – this approach is most effective in aggressively and successfully treating cancer. You also will be connected to a caring support team that includes social workers, genetic counselors, financial counselors and others who will be present for you throughout your cancer journey.

The LVHN Cancer Institute is a member of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Alliance, which gives you access to groundbreaking, lifesaving cancer care and breakthrough clinical research right here in the Lehigh Valley. LVHN patients have access to MSK clinical trials. This accelerates the data-collection process so investigational treatments can be approved faster and become available to more patients. See the clinical trials currently being conducted at the LVHN Cancer Institute.
