Follow-up Care

Depending on the stage of your cancer, as well as your personal preferences, your brain cancer follow-up care may vary greatly from someone else’s. You may have some or all of this follow-up care after being diagnosed.

Cancer rehabilitation

As you or a loved one recover from cancer or cancer-related treatment, many physical changes take place. Our specially educated therapists can teach you how to take control of your physical recovery through rehabilitation to help combat the devastating effects of fatigue, loss of independence with daily activities and weakness that may occur as the result of chemotherapy or radiation. We have open communication with the cancer center physicians and nurses and offer a customized approach to recovery that focuses on all of your needs.

Home care

There’s no place like home when you’re recovering from an illness or injury. Yet you want the reassurance and care of highly skilled health care professionals. We give you both. We provide home care when you don’t need to be in the hospital, but still require medical attention. Our team of health care professionals includes top-rated nurses, home health aides, social workers and rehabilitation therapists who help you recover as quickly as possible.

Nurse navigators

In 2011, nurse navigation services were made available in Lehigh Valley Health Network’s Cancer Center. The oncology nurse navigators provide a single point of contact for cancer patients, their family members, caregivers and referring physicians to access cancer care services. Nurse navigators are assigned to patients when they learn they have cancer to help them navigate their cancer care, from diagnosis to treatment. Nurse navigators provide all types of support to patients, from emotional support to guidance in decision-making regarding choices in care. At this time we are able to offer nurse navigation services to breast and lung cancer patients. We also strive to provide services for all Spanish-speaking patients diagnosed with or suspected of having any type of cancer.

Nutrition services

You need to keep up your strength when you are being treated for cancer. Our registered dietitians at Lehigh Valley Health Network's Cancer Center can help. Good nutrition will help you:

  • Feel better.
  • Maintain your strength and energy.
  • Maintain your weight.
  • Tolerate the effects of your treatment.
  • Decrease your chance for infection.
  • Recover and/or heal as quickly as possible.

Pain management

Our pain management specialists at Lehigh Valley Hospital--Cedar Crest and Lehigh Valley Hospital--Muhlenberg provide skilled, evidence-based care for people with chronic pain from cancer. Our experienced team of physicians and certified registered nurse practitioners evaluates a wide range of chronic pain problems. Successful management of chronic pain can be achieved through a full evaluation, diagnosis and treatment plan designed to decrease pain, improve function and positively impact quality of life. Clinical research is also a vital part of the patient care we offer.

Survivorship

We have a wide variety of programs available for cancer survivors. For example, the SurvivorPLACE program at Lehigh Valley Health Network’s Cancer Center has been enhanced over the past two years to expand services that help patients who have undergone treatment for cancer to live a healthy life. This includes preventing, detecting and treating complications from cancer treatment. Survivorship care is provided by a team experienced in the care of people with cancer. The team includes a nurse practitioner, registered nurse, social worker, registered dietitian and rehabilitation therapist. Patient resources include counseling, nutrition services, sexual health, cancer risk and genetic assessment, physical rehabilitation, and transitional loss and life-change services.

Therapy and counseling

We have a team of licensed social workers, a psychologist and a psychiatrist. They provide short-term individual, family and group therapy, and supportive counseling. We also have a cancer support team that helps you through difficult times. They're always ready to listen.
