Walter and Irene Baran Schuylkill Family Medicine Residency Community Involvement

The importance of bonding between residents and the community is well recognized. It not only enriches the educational experience, it also lays the foundation for lifelong relationships, which often results in the residents establishing roots in their newly adopted home. To help achieve this, a Community Advisory Board has been created, enlisting a diverse group of community members who have an interest in their community. This resource is already providing dividends through refreshing positivity and creative ideas.

A wide variety of opportunities and interactions will be available to absorb the essence, culture and history of the region. Didactic programs exploring the folklore, the role in the growth of our country and present-day health care challenges will be provided by faculty, community leaders and a few surprise guest speakers. An array of field trips throughout the duration of your stay will enhance the experience.

Longitudinal rotations also will play an important role. These will commence at the start of training and allow you to create your own pathways. You will interact directly with community mentors and develop an understanding of how environment, education, economic opportunities and population components influence health care needs, and how you can positively impact these social dynamics and improve the lives of the people you serve as a family medicine physician.

Walter and Irene Baran Schuylkill Family Medicine Residency Program

Residency naming honors memory of longtime Schuylkill County residents and philanthropists

Tony and Sandy Baran made a gift to name this program, which is crucial for Schuylkill County, in honor of Tony’s parents Walter and Irene. Walter “Wally” Baran was a former Secretary of General Services of Pennsylvania under Gov. Dick Thornburgh. Walter received the National Governors Association Award for Distinguished Service to State Government in 1982, which was presented to him by President Ronald Reagan. Locally, Walter also served as Director of the Schuylkill Economic Development Corp. and the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce.

“My parents were very generous and helped many people and supported many causes in our area, much of it anonymously,” Tony Baran said. “They were proud residents of Schuylkill County and always optimistic about its future. This is our way to honor them.”
