Get to know Chase Jones, DO, medical toxicology fellow.

It’s hard not to sound cliché here, but I found a new family in this program. This wasn’t four years of “going to work.”

What makes your LVHN training program different from others across the country?

This program is different because of the strong emphasis on making didactics engaging and ensuring that we learn the foundations of emergency medicine without ignoring the rapidly changing evidence-based progress of the field.

What has been the most extraordinary part of your training experience so far?

The support and guidance of both core faculty and ancillary staff gave me four years where I never felt like I was struggling alone. The camaraderie LVH helped build in my residency class itself helped pull me through even the darkest parts of the pandemic.

What is one memory you have from your training so far that will stick with you for your career?

I will never forget suiting up in full personal protective equipment, complete with powered air purifying respirator, and stepping into the negative pressure room of a crashing COVID patient. It felt like a science fiction movie as we ran the code in such a hostile environment, intubating with special equipment and placing central and arterial lines while calling out orders over the din of multiple alarms.

What is one piece of advice you would share with someone as they select a training program?

Don’t compromise on your education. When you finish your residency, it’s all on you to continue learning and progress your practice, so you should take full advantage of residency as a means of truly building your foundational knowledge. Find a program that really invests in didactics beyond just assigning some reading or independent learning.

What does it mean to be a resident/fellow at LVHN?

It’s hard not to sound cliché here, but I found a new family in this program. This wasn’t four years of “going to work.” This was a chapter of my life that made me a better person, and I feel so proud watching my classmates and the juniors turn into these amazing physicians around me. You don’t do this alone; you do this with your friends.
