In 1971, we became one of the country’s first community National Cancer Institute-designated cancer research centers. This designation made us part of an elite group of cancer centers exploring new ways of detecting and treating cancer.

Today, Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute remains at the forefront of cancer care through clinical trials that are making care safer and more effective. You have access to hundreds of clinical trials, some of which are only available in a select number of cancer centers.

Suresh Nair, MD, Chief of Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute, explains how our partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Alliance brings the most advanced standards of care to cancer patients.

Cancer research and clinical trials at Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute

Highlights of our cancer research efforts include:

National clinical trials

We are the only cancer center in the region, and one of a few in the country, participating in the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Alliance (MSK Cancer Alliance). Our membership gives you access to hundreds of trials, including options for rare and complex cancers. Read more about our membership in the MSK Cancer Alliance.

Pioneering care

You may be among the first people in the country to receive new treatments because of our participation in early phase clinical trials. These trials are only available in select cancer programs such as ours.

Lehigh Valley Health Network also is among a few health systems and cancer institutes in the United States selected to participate in Strata Precision Oncology Network’s  Strata Trial. This study performs molecular profiling of specific types of tumors to help match patients to new precision treatment options. Learn more about Strata molecular profiling and which patients may qualify for participation.

Broad range of options

We offer clinical trials in all aspects of cancer care, including new surgical techniques and radiation therapy technologies. Find a cancer clinical trial.

Safety

Our team includes research nurses who are in contact with you throughout your clinical trial experience. These specialists offer an added layer of protection against complications and avoidable side effects. Get more cancer clinical trials patient information.

Access to prestigious clinical trials

Through clinical trials, the Cancer Institute tests new treatments, such as targeted therapy, which may transform cancer care.

We are one of few cancer centers in the region participating in:

Targeted therapy

We are one of few cancer centers in Pennsylvania participating in TAPUR (Targeted Agent and Profiling Utilization Registry), which is advancing cancer care through targeted therapies. This innovative treatment includes cancer drugs that disrupt molecules within cancer cells so they stop growing. Find out more about targeted therapy.
