Blood donations have remained critically low throughout the pandemic, contributing to the most critical national blood shortage the United States has ever seen. Type O (both O+ and O-) is always in demand, but all types are important. Not only is donated blood required for people who experience a traumatic injury, but blood and blood products (like plasma and platelets) are needed for people in cancer treatment, as well as for prematurely born infants and for some people who need surgery.
Miller-Keystone Blood Center (MKBC) is this region’s primary blood center, providing blood to 29 hospitals in eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey – Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) is one of those hospitals. To help reduce the shortage of donated blood, LVHN is hosting two blood drives conducted by MKBC in the coming weeks:
-
Lehigh Valley Hospital–Muhlenberg
- June 13, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
-
Lehigh Valley Hospital–Hecktown Oaks
- June 27, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Appointments are required and can be scheduled through Miller-Keystone’s website, GiveAPint.org or by calling 800-B-A-DONOR (223-6667).
