TeleInfectious diseases (TeleID)

teleIDLuther Rhodes III, MD, is Lehigh Valley Health Network’s director of infectious diseases. Years ago, Dr. Rhodes was intrigued by the potential telehealth offered to improve patient access to infectious disease specialists. Today, he regularly cares for patients at remote hospitals using LVHN’s TeleID (Infectious Diseases) program.

Infectious diseases are important to contain, control and when possible, cure. One of the advantages of consulting with an infectious disease specialist through LVHN’s Teleinfectious Diseases (TeleID) program is that most patients remain in their local hospital for treatment while under the watchful care of the specialist.

LVHN started providing TeleID services to the Blue Mountain Health System in April 2011, to Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital in October 2011, to Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Hazleton in January 2013 and Summit Health in July 2016.

The program uses high-definition videoconferencing equipment, as well as electronic stethoscopes and patient exam cameras.

TeleID facts:

  • 95 percent of TeleID patients remain in their local hospital.
  • Three remote hospitals utilize TeleID services
  • On average there 600 consults per year have been completed through Jan 2017 less than 5% of the patients require transfer to another hospital for a higher level of care.
