The Effects of Harp Music on Anxiety, Depression, and Nausea in Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy

Description

If you agree to participate in this research study, you will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: Study Intervention group and Control Intervention group. If you are assigned to the study intervention group, you will receive an iPod Shuffle with individual headphones and you will be asked to listen to recorded therapeutic harp music for 20 minutes over the course of 12 chemotherapy cycles. If you are randomized to the control group, you will be asked to receive treatment as you would normally. You will be observed by the research coordinator regardless of the group to which you have been assigned. You will have your heart rate and blood pressure measured as well as complete self-directed surveys before and after chemotherapy treatment. Your participation in this study will end at the conclusion of the 12 weeks chemotherapy cycle.

Eligibility

Inclusion Criteria
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be scheduled to receive chemotherapy for the first time during study enrollment period
  • Must receive chemotherapy at the LVHN Cedar Crest Infusion Center
  • Must have a chemotherapy regimen of Adriamycin/Cytoxan every 2 weeks for 4 cycles followed by weekly paclitaxel for 12 weeks
  • Must be a breast cancer patient
