General Surgery Residency Program Department Information

The department of surgery provides acute care in all major clinical areas within state-of-the-art medical-surgical and critical care units. A strong general surgery service is complemented by numerous surgical specialties, including cardiothoracic surgery, colon and rectal surgery, neurological surgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, urology and vascular surgery. The hospital’s kidney and pancreatic transplant programs expand the treatment options for patients in eastern Pennsylvania. LVHN has been at the forefront of minimally invasive surgery for both basic and complex abdominal, thoracic and spine procedures.

A leader in the field of trauma-surgical critical care, LVHN was the first designated Level I Trauma Center in Pennsylvania. The Regional Burn Center serves northeastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey, and is part of the largest coordinated burn care network in the country.

The department of surgery also sponsors a six-year integrated plastic surgery residency, a five-year otolaryngology head and neck surgery residency, a one-year fellowship in surgical critical care and a one-year fellowship in colon and rectal surgery.

LVHN has partnered with the University of South Florida Health (USF Health) Morsani College of Medicine in developing a new medical school model. Called SELECT (Scholarly Excellence, Leadership Experiences, Collaborative Training) it’s designed to prepare students to become physician leaders. Students accepted into the SELECT program will spend the first two years at the USF campus in Tampa. Clinical training will occur at LVHN along with special training in leadership.
