The Transitional Year Residency program is scheduled on a 13-block format. Each block is generally four weeks in duration.
As a transitional year resident, you will are to spend up to six blocks learning fundamental clinical skills: three blocks of general medicine (inpatient), one block CICU (cardiac intensive care unit), one block MICU (medical intensive care unit), and four weeks night float. You’ll also complete one block in emergency medicine, one block of ambulatory medicine (internal medicine and family medicine) and up to seven-and-one-half blocks of elective time. The transitional year resident is expected to function in the capacity of a categorical first-year resident in the department in which he or she is rotating to include taking call when required.
Transitional residents are given the opportunity to take electives through any of the other residency programs and subspecialty services to include but not limited to: general surgery, inpatient and outpatient general medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, radiology, radiation oncology, anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, family practice, and all the subspecialties in internal medicine.
In addition, the resident gains experience in outpatient medical care during this year by participating in care at Lehigh Valley Physicians Practice Clinic near Lehigh Valley Hospital –17th Street during their ambulatory block.
The transitional year program will be arranged to fulfill the requirements of the planned residency, and it can be arranged to fulfill the requirements of a first-year residency training in internal medicine. The program is of the same high quality as our other ACGME-accredited residencies.
