Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) remains vigilant as the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) evolves, and we are committed to being your partner in health in these unprecedented times. As a leader in infection control and prevention, LVHN is taking extraordinary steps to deliver the smart, comprehensive care you need through new ways to screen, assess, test and keep you safe.

Free COVID-19 pre-screenings

If you think you have COVID-19 or may have been exposed to someone who does, stay home. We are providing free COVID-19 screenings online and by phone. You must be in the state of Pennsylvania to receive screening due to medical licensing regulations:

We want to screen you via these technologies so that you remain in your own home and only need to leave if testing is needed. This screening helps reduce the spread of COVID-19 and it helps keep your doctor's office open and available to provide other important care.

During the screening, if our medical professionals determine you have COVID-19 symptoms, you will be directed to one of LVHN’s stand-alone COVID-19 Assess and Test locations. You will qualify for a test ONLY if you have symptoms (fever, cough and shortness of breath). The test detects active disease and cannot determine if you have been exposed. It is important to note that tests are reserved for those who need them most.

COVID-19 Assess and Test Locations

LVHN has opened stand-alone Assess and Test locations throughout the region. They have been established to minimize our community’s exposure to COVID-19. You must receive guidance via the nurse line, an LVHN Video Visit, an eVisit or your provider to be assessed and possibly tested. If you do not have insurance, you will receive a bill but you won’t be required to pay.

Waiting protocol to protect you and others

To further reduce risk of exposure to coronavirus, we are asking patients to wait in their car instead of in the waiting room at our Assess and Test locations.

When you arrive at the Assess and Test office, go inside and check in with the registration desk. You will be asked to provide your mobile phone number. Then you can return to your car and wait until the Assess and Test office calls your mobile phone, letting you know you can be seen.

By doing this, you will reduce your risk of exposure to coronavirus in a busy waiting area, as well as potentially protect others if you do happen to have coronavirus or another infection.

Tips to protect yourself and your family

  • Keep your essential doctor appointments, tests and procedures.
  • Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds or use a hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Avoid large crowds.
  • Carefully consider your travel plans, and follow government travel guidelines.
  • Practice social distancing by staying at least 6 feet away from others. If you are 80 or older, this is especially important.

Other actions LVHN is taking to keep you safe

  • Updated visitation policy. Updated visitation policies. In our hospitals, Family Birth and Newborn Centers and outpatient facilities, we have implemented strict visitation guidelines for your protection and the safety of our caregivers.
  • Hospital visitor screenings. Visitors to any LVHN hospital location will have their temperature taken using a forehead thermometer and will be screened for possible COVID-19 symptoms. Any visitor with a temperature higher than 100 degrees Fahrenheit will be directed to postpone their visit and will receive guidance on further COVID-19 screenings.
  • Updated surgery waiting room policy. In all LVHN surgery waiting rooms, only one visitor is permitted per patient. Visitors are being seated at least six feet away from one another. Visitors are encouraged to use the EASE app, which sends real-time updates to loved ones. Visitors who drive patient for surgery are asked if they are willing to leave their phone number and go to another location so they can be called when the patient is ready for discharge.
  • Postponing elective surgeries. Following recommendations from the nation’s leading surgeons, LVHN is postponing elective surgeries, which are surgeries scheduled in advance because they do not involve a medical emergency and can be postponed without causing harm to the patient. Patients whose procedures are postponed are being contacted individually. Postponing elective surgeries helps prevent the spread of disease and helps hospitals conserve precious resources such as blood, ventilators and protective equipment for providers.
  • Temporarily closing select operating rooms. In order to protect you and our staff and to preserve medical supplies and protective equipment, LVHN is temporarily closing select operating rooms across the health network. Critical procedures will be relocated to other locations within the health network. If this impacts you, LVHN will contact you to discuss plans for your scheduled procedure.
  • Postponing previously scheduled tests and procedures. As part of our ongoing effort to ensure safety for patients, staff and our community during the COVID-19 outbreak, LVHN is implementing a process to postpone some previously scheduled tests and procedures. LVHN staff will call you to inform you if your test or procedure needs to be postponed.
  • Consolidating select LVHN ExpressCARE locations. To help ensure adequate staffing at LVHN COVID-19 Assess and Test locations, LVHN is temporarily suspending services at three LVHN ExpressCARE locations. In addition, LVHN ExpressCARE locations currently offering COVID-19 Assess and Test services and typical ExpressCARE services will redirect people seeking ExpressCARE treatment for minor illnesses and injuries to other ExpressCARE locations.
  • Pre-surgery screening. We are screening all patients scheduled for surgery for COVID-19 the day before surgery.
  • Limiting nonclinical personnel in the hospital. This includes LVHN employees who are not located at our hospitals as well as vendors, consultants and volunteers.
  • Screening employees when they come to work. Employees at LVHN hospitals, LVHN Health Centers and LVPG Practices have their temperature taken when they arrive at work. If they have a temperature at or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, they are sent home to self-isolate. If they have a fever and other respiratory symptoms, they are sent to an LVHN COVID-19 Assess and Test Location and then sent home to self-isolate. If they have a temperature below 100 degrees Fahrenheit, they proceed to work.
  • Temporarily suspending mammogram screenings and mobile mammography coach visits. We are temporarily postponing all mammogram screenings, including visits from the mobile mammography coach until further notice in our continued effort to keep LVHN colleagues and patients safe. During this time, we will continue to offer diagnostic tests, if appropriate, and clinical breast exams. If you have questions, contact your primary care provider.
