Breast self-exams

It’s highly recommended that women examine their breasts once a month to make sure there aren’t any new lumps or areas for concern.

During a breast self-exam, you should:

  • Do a visual inspection for swelling, dimpling of the skin or changes to the shape of your breasts.
  • Stand in front of a mirror, first with your hands at your sides, then with your hands above your head, and finally with your hands on your hips.
  • Inspect your breasts for lumps and thickened areas while standing up and lying down. You should use the opposite hand of the breast you are inspecting and move your fingers in a circular motion across your entire breast and under your arms. When you are lying down, put the arm on the side you are examining above your head.

The importance of screening mammograms

While breast self-exams are an important part of your breast health, they should not become a replacement for regular screening mammograms. This test can find cancers that are so small that you cannot feel them yourself. Women who are age 40 and older should get a screening mammogram once a year. If you are at higher risk for breast cancer due to family history or a personal history of certain breast diseases, you may be qualified to start annual screenings at an earlier age.
