Relief From Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

At Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), our acid reflux treatment team offers a range of treatments to manage gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), including medications and guidance on diet and lifestyle changes. When those options aren’t enough, we have general surgeons with expertise in surgical treatment for GERD. They perform the latest minimally invasive procedures.

What is GERD, and why does it matter?

Gastroesophageal reflux (also called acid reflux) occurs when a muscular valve that separates the stomach from the esophagus fails to close properly. That allows the contents of the stomach to flow back up into the esophagus. The most common symptom is the stinging discomfort of heartburn. If reflux becomes repeated and bothersome, the condition is referred to as GERD.

Along with heartburn, other GERD symptoms may include a bad taste in the mouth, dry cough, belching (burping), sore throat and difficulty swallowing. Without proper treatment, GERD can cause changes in the esophagus over time and increase the risk for a type of cancer there.
