Virtual Patient Observation

Watch our video to learn more about Virtual Patient Observation.

Virtual Patient Observation started as a pilot on a patient care unit that required a high number of one-to-one patient sitters for patient safety purposes. During the pilot, instead of placing a staff member in each patient room to observe a patient, video monitoring equipment was used.

Using virtual patient observation technology, a trained staff member has the ability to watch up to 15 patients at a time utilizing live video. The video monitoring staff communicates with the patient when at-risk behaviors are noted until a staff member from the unit can get into the patient’s room to assist. The program is being expanded to other units as an additional layer of safety for our patients.

Results: During the first year of implementation, the fall rate on that unit decreased by 56%.
