Call Schedules

Weekday call

Two fellows (total fellowship is 15 fellows) are on call at a time. One fellow, either a first- or second-year fellow (“junior fellow”), covers LVH–Cedar Crest, an 800-bed tertiary hospital. In-house call is not required; however, junior fellows usually elect to stay in-house when at LVH–Cedar Crest. Coverage is 4:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. Junior Fellow on call is excused at 9 a.m. after sign-out and may have no assigned responsibility until 7 a.m. the following morning.

The other Fellow, either a second- or third-year Fellow (“senior Fellow”), is the back-up Fellow who assists the junior Fellow if he or she needs advice and substitutes for the junior Fellow if they exceed their cap or are otherwise unable to complete their call. The cardiac intensive care unit Fellow at LVH–Cedar Crest stays until 8 p.m. to assist the junior Fellow in the early evening.

Weekend call

Junior Fellow

Long junior Fellow rounds on patients 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Short junior Fellow covers 8 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday.

Long junior Fellow covers 7 a.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday.

Long junior Fellow at LVH–Cedar Crest is excused from service after sign out 9 a.m. Monday.

Senior fellow

Cardiac intensive care unit is covered by senior Fellow from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. both days, including teaching rounds with the residents and supervising attending.

Senior Fellow serves as backup Fellow from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Additional senior Fellow makes rounds on established patients at LVH–Muhlenberg from 7 a.m. to noon on weekends.
