Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori) Infection

While H. pylori infection may be present in more than half the people in the world, many are unaware because it doesn’t make them sick. However, if you develop a peptic ulcer, clinicians at LVPG Gastroenterology will evaluate you for H. pylori.

  2. Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori) Infection

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria that can infect your stomach. This often happens during childhood. In adulthood, the infection can lead to peptic (stomach) ulcers, which are sores on the lining of the stomach or in the first part of the small intestine. H. pylori is also a strong risk factor for certain types of stomach cancer.

A stomach ulcer alone does not necessarily signal H. pylori infection since ulcers can have other causes such as medication.

What are the symptoms of H. pylori?

Symptoms of H. pylori infection may include:

  • Pain/discomfort in the upper belly
  • Feeling full after eating a small amount of food
  • Not feeling hungry
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dark or black stools
  • Fatigue

If H. pylori infection has caused ulcers or stomach cancer, you may experience pain or discomfort in the upper belly or nausea and vomiting.

How is H. pylori diagnosed?

At LVPG Gastroenterology, we will thoroughly evaluate your condition with blood tests, stool testing, breath tests and a biopsy.

How is H. pylori infection treated?

H. pylori infection is treated with antibiotics and acid-reducing medication. Most regimens include three or more medications for two weeks. After treatment, your clinician will order follow-up tests to see if the H. pylori infection has resolved.
