What is pruritus ani?

Pruritus ani is the medical term for itching around the anus. The itching may be persistent or come and go, and it can range from mildly irritating to severe enough to interfere with daily activities, sleep, and quality of life.

What causes anal itching?

Anal itching can have many causes, and in some cases more than one factor may contribute. Common causes include:

  • Excess moisture from perspiration or stool leakage
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Anal fissures
  • Skin irritation from excessive cleansing
  • Reactions to soaps, wipes, creams, or personal care products
  • Certain foods and beverages

Some people notice worsening symptoms after consuming coffee, tea, carbonated beverages, dairy products, tomatoes, chocolate, nuts, beer, or wine.

Because many conditions can cause similar symptoms, persistent anal itching should be evaluated by a healthcare clinician to identify the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment.

Is anal itching caused by poor hygiene?

Usually not. In fact, excessive cleaning is often a contributing factor.

Many people understandably try to relieve symptoms by washing the area frequently or scrubbing more aggressively. Unfortunately, excessive cleansing can damage sensitive skin and remove natural protective oils, which may worsen itching and irritation.

How can I treat or manage anal itching at home?

Your clinician may recommend several self-care measures to soothe irritation and support healing:

Keep the area clean and dry

  • Gently cleanse the area with warm water.
  • Pat dry rather than rubbing.
  • Consider using soft cotton or gauze to help absorb excess moisture.
  • Avoid scented powders, sprays, and deodorizing products.

Avoid skin irritation

  • Avoid harsh soaps and cleansers.
  • Avoid vigorous scrubbing.
  • Use unscented wipes only if recommended by your clinician.
  • Try to avoid scratching, as scratching can further irritate the skin and prolong symptoms.

Use medications as directed

  • Apply prescription or over-the-counter treatments only as recommended by your healthcare clinician.
  • Overuse of creams and ointments can sometimes worsen irritation or dryness.
