Black History Month

For Black History Month, Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) will honor the theme "African Americans and Labor," recognizing the remarkable contributions African Americans have made across various sectors, including industry, health care and social justice. This year also commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and Maids, led by A. Philip Randolph, a pivotal moment in labor history that highlights the resilience and advocacy of African American workers in their fight for equality and justice.

Black inventors who shaped health care

Modern health care has been revolutionized by the innovations of Black inventors. Dr. Charles Drew's development of blood banking techniques and storage systems has saved countless lives globally, particularly in emergency and surgical contexts. Likewise, Dr. Patricia Bath’s invention of the Laserphaco Probe significantly improved cataract surgery outcomes, while Otis Boykin’s advancements in resistors enhanced pacemaker technology and made lifesaving heart treatments more reliable.

Black innovators who led the way

Another crucial figure is Vivien Thomas, whose work in developing techniques for heart surgery paved the way for modern cardiac care. He was a scientist and educator who led surgery departments across the United States, despite never going to college or medical school.

Black LVHN colleagues share their stories

This month, LVHN colleagues will share personal stories reflecting on how this theme resonates with their lives and careers, offering insights into the ongoing impact of African American contributions to health care and beyond.
