Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute Provides Exceptional Radiation Oncology Options

Leading-edge technology available close to home

When it comes to radiation treatment for people with cancer, accessing the very latest technology and expertise while balancing quality of life is key. And the radiation oncologists at Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute offer both. Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute is dedicated to providing exceptional, leading-edge care in a convenient location close to home.

“Radiation oncology has advanced dramatically in recent years, and the Cancer Institute is at the forefront,” says April Metzger, MD, radiation oncologist with Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute. “Our investment in new technology and software enables us to more accurately plan and administer radiation to tumor sites, providing unparalleled benefits to those we treat.”

Greater precision

One type of leading-edge technology offered through Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute is the Varian Edge®. This radiosurgery system uses advanced imaging, beam planning, motion management and radiation-dose delivery to provide highly precise radiation treatment.

The system uses a linear accelerator to shape the radiation beam to the exact dimensions of the tumor, effectively targeting the cancer while sparing healthy surrounding tissue.

“The Edge is often used to treat very small tumors of the lung, prostate, brain and spine,” Dr. Metzger explains. “Due to its exceptional precision, we are able to provide noninvasive treatment of earlier stage cancers.”

High dose delivery

Some forms of radiation oncology, such as high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy, have been successfully used for years. However, Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute is employing new applications of the technology, which can improve treatment for people with cervical, breast, prostate and endometrial cancer.

“HDR allows us to provide a higher dose of radiation over a short period of time by implanting a radioactive source directly inside or close to the tumor,” Dr. Metzger says. “New applications of this internal radiation therapy include a hybrid tandem and ring applicator that enables us to administer radiation in more than one direction, better targeting the tumor and limiting radiation to nearby tissues.”

Personalized approach

Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute, which is accredited by the American College of Radiology, not only provides the full gamut of radiation oncology therapies but does so in world-class facilities close to home.

“Cancer treatment can be difficult. Whenever possible, we try to make therapy as convenient as possible and offer therapies that allow for shorter treatment regimens,” Dr. Metzger says. “However, cancer is not a one-size-fits-all disease. We look at each person as an individual and determine the best course of treatment for their unique needs. We have the breadth and depth of expertise and technology to provide truly personalized care.”
