About 2 million people are living with limb loss in the United States. LVHN recognizes those living with a limb loss or difference during an annual Amputee Awareness Day event.

The featured speaker at this year’s event will be Matthew Brewer, professional athlete on the U.S. Paralympic Alpine Ski team. At 33 years old, Brewer was diagnosed with testicular cancer and faced surgery, chemotherapy, daily nausea and extreme pain. His battle with cancer led to a drug addiction and an overdose that ultimately led to amputation of both his legs.

The Amputee Awareness Day event is Saturday, April 29, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest, Kasych Family Pavilion

In Brewer’s speech, “Overcoming Obstacles by Meaningful Connections,” he will share his story of recovery through rehabilitation and adaptive sports. He was selected to represent TEAM USA in the 2022 Winter Paralympics in Beijing three years after taking up the sport. Brewer also participated in swimming and running events in the Angel City Games, where he earned a gold medal.

The Amputee Awareness Day event is Saturday, April 29, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest, Kasych Family Pavilion. It’s sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Amputee Awareness Group and will include vendors, product demonstrations and lunch.

To register, call 888-402-LVHN (5846).
