Patient and Family Advisory Council

Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) is a volunteer group of patients, caregivers and colleagues who help ensure that patients and families have a voice in improving the patient experience at Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute.

What does the PFAC do?

PFAC listens to feedback and concerns shared by patients and families, then uses those insights to improve or enhance the cancer treatment experience for patients and families.

Would you like to join PFAC?

Here’s what we ask of our members:

  • Willingly talk about your experience with Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute.
  • Attend monthly meetings.
  • Collaboratively work on projects to improve patient-family centered care at Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute.
  • Complete training and requirements of the Lehigh Valley Health Network volunteer department.

Goals for PFAC

  • Increase awareness of Patient Family Advisory Council among patients and families.
  • Share insights and information about patient and family needs.
  • Advocate to create positive patient experiences.

Here’s what PFAC has accomplished

  • Participated in design planning for new inpatient oncology unit 5K South (opened July 2020)
  • Created a pamphlet about deep breathing and relaxation, which was added to the Patient Education library
  • Participated in filming of radiation oncology patient education video
  • Designed a welcome brochure for new patients
  • Participated in design of the healing garden at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Hecktown Oaks
  • Participated in Magnet® reaccreditation survey (fifth Magnet redesignation achieved in September 2020)
  • Evaluated and redesigned new patient education folder
  • Identified and researched impact of positive toxicity and provided recommendations to the oncology team
