Prior to fellowship, Derek served our country as a special operations officer for the 3rd Ranger Battalion and participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. During this service, he was awarded the Bronze Star. Upon graduation, Derek moved to Alabama and accepted a position with the Hughston Clinic in Montgomery where he practices Sports Medicine. He is a member of the Alabama Head Injury Task Force, the Society of US Army Flight Surgeons, and the Alabama Head and Spinal Cord Injury Trust Fund Advisory. He serves as the team physician for St. James High School, Huntington College (Div. III), Faulkner University (NAIA), and the Montgomery Biscuits (AA Baseball).
