I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, where my inspiration to become a doctor began early while visiting my mother, a neonatologist, at San Juan City Hospital. I studied biology at Boston University and earned my medical degree at Yale. Although I first thought pediatrics would be my path, I quickly fell in love with obstetrics during my clinical rotations, and by the second week I knew maternal fetal medicine was the specialty for me after listening to a maternal physiology lecture. I was completely captivated by the way pregnancy impacts every organ system. I went on to complete my residency in obstetrics and gynecology and fellowship in maternal fetal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, along with a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology. Since joining the division of maternal fetal medicine at LVHN in 2005, my primary clinical focus has been maternal cardiac disease, and I have had the privilege of co-directing our cardio-obstetrics (heart and pregnancy) program since 2010. I am Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, supporting resident and faculty scholarship, and also program director for our Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship, approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in 2022. Teaching is one of the most rewarding parts of my career. I love working with residents in the high-risk clinic, ultrasound unit and inpatient perinatal service, as well as mentoring them in research and writing. Being part of residency education keeps me inspired, and I can’t imagine practicing medicine outside of a residency program.
