Clinical Trial:

Ottawa ankle/foot rules

Full Name

Ankle or Foot Injuries: The Effect of Triage-Based Application of the Ottawa Ankle and Foot Rules (OAR/OFR) on the Number of Radiographs Ordered: A Pilot Study (Investigator-initiated study) (1_PRO00000185)

Description

Participants will be assigned to one of two study groups: control (treated in the usual way) and intervention (treated via nurse triage and use of the Ottawa Ankle and Foot Rules). Participants in the intervention group who are deemed OAR/OFR negative by triage will receive a written explanation about why they do not need a radiograph in their discharge instructions. (An X-ray can still be performed even if the participant is deemed OAR/OFR negative, and will take place at the discretion of the provider for a multitude of reasons [including, but not limited to, patient or family preference, provider preference, medico legal risk, etc.]) A positive radiograph will be defined as any X-ray showing one or more fractures or dislocations after being interpreted by a network radiologist. Approximately two weeks after discharge, participants will be contacted by telephone to complete a questionnaire. If the study team is unable to reach the participant by telephone, a letter will be mailed.
