Medical-Surgical Nursing Careers
Build advanced skills while finding the unit that fits you.
Medical-surgical nursing at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), part of Jefferson Health, isn’t one type of unit – it’s many. That means you can grow within med-surg to help you find the right fit.
With opportunities across the Lehigh Valley and Northeastern Pennsylvania, you can start in med-surg building a foundation that opens doors across specialties.
No two shifts look the same, but what your day looks like will depend on your unit. Some teams focus on post-surgical recovery, while others specialize in cardiac, neurological or higher-acuity patients.
Across our health network, med-surg nurses care for a wide range of patient needs, and you’ll be part of a team that builds deep expertise within your specific unit while still developing strong, transferable skills.
It’s a great fit for nurses who enjoy variety, want to grow quickly and thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Ask any nurse what stands out, and you’ll hear the same thing: the people.
“Our med-surg unit stands out because of its people, its values, its expertise and its culture. It is a close-knit, globally diverse team committed to safety, clinical excellence and delivering care that gives families peace of mind,” says Kaitlyn Weidner, Director of Clinical Services at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest.
Your patient population will depend on the unit you join. Some teams focus on neurological conditions like stroke and seizures, while others care for cardiac, respiratory or post-surgical patients.
Across our health network, med-surg units support a wide range of needs – including chronic and complex conditions like renal disease and diabetes, as well as oncology, behavioral health and hospice care – so you’ll build meaningful experience within your specific setting.
Acuity varies by unit, but many med-surg teams care for patients with complex, multisystem conditions or those recovering from surgery and requiring close monitoring.
It’s an environment that helps you build strong clinical judgment and confidence over time.
The skills you use day to day will reflect your unit’s focus. For example, some units emphasize telemetry and cardiac care, while others focus more on postoperative recovery, neurological assessment or chronic disease management.
Wherever you land, you’ll build a strong foundation in patient assessment, prioritization and clinical decision-making.
