SummaryThe Independent Living Donor Advocate (ILDA) is an advocate for living donors, and a safeguard for aspects of informed consent unique to the potential living donor population. In practice, the living donor advocate is knowledgeable about donation and transplantation, the living donor informed consent process, and protects and promotes the interests of the potential living donor. However, the ILDA does not perform other duties for the transplant program.
Job Duties
- Contact the potential donor upon referral by the living donor team to introduce self, role and contact information. Document this initial contact in EPIC (EMR).
- Meet with the potential donor for the Living Donor Advocacy Interview. Communicate any issues/concerns raised during the Advocacy Assessment or interactions with the potential donor directly to the appropriate member of the transplant team (i.e. a deficit in knowledge about potential risks may be referred to the Transplant Physician or Surgeon; concerns about family pressure may be referred to the Transplant Social Worker etc) as well as document in the Advocacy Assessment.
- Meets with living donor post donation during his/her inpatient stay. May meet during the post discharge/post-transplant phase as needed.
- Participates in the Living Donor Selection Committee interdisciplinary team meeting either in person of via conference call to provide input into the donor selection process.
- Demonstrates professional growth through independent reading, professional networking, and attending relevant conferences and webinars. Shares information obtained through educational endeavors with colleagues and others incorporating knowledge into practice as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s Degree
- 3 years experience in a healthcare setting.
- Ability to use computer, fax, copier, telephone and/or pagers.
- Ability to interact with patients, medical staff, nursing staff, community agencies and facilities.
- Ability to problem solve, provide critical thinking and manage crisis situations.
- Knowledgeable about donation, transplantation, medical ethics, informed consent, and family pressures and dynamics.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
Physical DemandsLift and carry 7 lbs., continuous sitting >67%, frequent keyboard use/repetitive motion, frequent fine motor activity/wrist position deviation.
