Page Hierarchy

  2. Pediatric Surgery

The pediatric surgical team at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children's Hospital works closely with other pediatric providers and staff to provide care in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of Children’s Hospital. They offer advanced surgical techniques including minimally invasive procedures for common pediatric surgical conditions. The result is a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, less pain and less scarring.

In both Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Surgery Center, surgeons work closely with the pediatric anesthesia and sedation team.

Outpatient pediatric surgery in a center designed just for kids and their parents

Many procedures can be performed at the J.B. and Kathleen Reilly Children’s Surgery Center. This outpatient center is dedicated to children’s surgery needs. Using distractions like iPads® and administering anesthesia in the form of “silly juice,” we make surgery a little less scary for kids – and for parents. You and other family members can relax in a private waiting room knowing you’ll be alerted as soon as your child’s procedure is complete.

Anesthesia and sedation team support pediatric surgeons

Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital has the area’s only team of pediatric anesthesiologists. They deliver medicines that safely relieve pain for newborns to teens – before, during and after surgery. They support doctors in the Children’s hospital and in the Children’s Surgery Center. In other settings, including radiology and the Regional Burn Center, they provide sedation services to help ease kids’ anxiety during procedures.

Child-life program

Certified child-life specialists help kids cope with a visit to the hospital. They are experts in child development, and they partner with doctors, nurses, social workers and other members of your care team to meet the unique needs of your child and your family.

The child-life program at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital is the only one in the area where child-life specialists help children receiving medical treatment by offering opportunities for stress relief and relaxation, as well as distractions to make procedures easier.

Baby Isabella

Pediatric Surgery

What would you do if you learned your unborn daughter had a serious – but treatable – birth defect? It happened to Diana Fernandez Rodriguez of Hazleton, who last winter was told her soon-to-be-born daughter, Isabella, had a rare condition called gastroschisis.
