Whether it was watching medical shows on television or requesting doctors’ kits from Santa Claus, Theresa Kuhn, MD, always made her ambitions clear – even as a child. Growing up in Whitehall, she and her mother would often drive past Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) billboards. “One day I will work there,” Dr. Kuhn would say, and sure enough, that vision became reality when she joined the expert team at Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute this year.

Adding to the Cancer Institute’s expertise, Dr. Kuhn is not only fellowship-trained in gynecologic oncology, but she also completed fellowships in surgical critical care, advanced pelvic surgery and lower genital tract research and treatment.

What inspired you to get into medicine?

Since I was very young, I told my mom I wanted to be a doctor, and it never changed. I often said, “One day I will work at LVHN,” so for me, this is truly a dream come true.

What's one thing you hope patients take away from their time with you?

I hope they know I care about them as human beings and patients. I believe in comprehensive care and being with my patients every step of the way through their treatment.

My patients.

What is the hardest part of your job?

It’s never easy telling someone they have cancer.

In your specialty, what do you imagine the future will bring for patient care?

Gynecologic oncology is on the leading edge of research with new surgical techniques, development of targeted therapies and more clinicals trials, making cancer care even better. I hope my patients can benefit from all of these with the resources that Jefferson and LVHN have to offer.

Bring a smile to my patients’ faces.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Hot yoga, trying new restaurants and trail walking with my dog.

I grew up figure skating competitively – and, yes, mastered the pancake spin.

What is your dog’s name and how long has he/she been part of your family?

My dog, Tea, is an 11-year-old brown Boston terrier.

What’s your favorite sports team and/or sport?
