Wound medicine and hyperbaric oxygen therapy specialist Brent Jones, MD, has been appointed Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN)’s Chief, Section of Wound Management.

“It is an honor to lead such an experienced team of physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other clinicians in providing world-class wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy services.” -  Brent Jones, MD

As the leader of LVHN’s wound management and hyperbaric oxygen therapy programs, Dr. Jones oversees the health network’s wound healing centers in Allentown and Bethlehem as well as the hyperbaric oxygen therapy practices at Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Muhlenberg and LVH–Pocono.

“It is an honor to lead such an experienced team of physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other clinicians in providing world-class wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy services,” Dr. Jones says. “I look forward to continuing to grow our programs and providing the best possible care to patients throughout the region.”

Expertise

Dr. Jones completed his medical training at New York University School of Medicine and an emergency medicine residency and undersea and hyperbaric medicine fellowship at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.

He is board-certified in emergency medicine and is one of approximately 500 physicians in the country board-certified in undersea and hyperbaric medicine.

Prior to joining LVHN in June, he served as a wound medicine and hyperbaric oxygen therapy specialist at University Health in San Antonio, Texas.

Vision for the future

LVHN’s wound management program provides advanced care for non-healing and hard-to-heal wounds, including pressure ulcers (bed sores), ostomies and wounds that are slow to heal due to diabetes, cancer, circulatory system disorders or radiation therapy.

The program offers a wide range of treatment options, including debridement to remove infected or unhealthy tissue, advanced wound dressings, compressive wraps, medications, skin substitute grafts, devices to relieve pressure on wounds, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (which involves breathing in pure oxygen in a pressurized environment). In addition to wounds, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is also an approved treatment for crush injuries, decompression sickness, arterial insufficiencies, anemia, brain abscesses, soft tissue infections, radiation injuries, refractory osteomyelitis (a recurrent infection of the bone or one that has not responded to other treatments), burns, sudden hearing loss, air or gas embolisms and carbon monoxide poisoning.

In his leadership role, Dr. Jones looks forward to advancing LVHN’s wound management and hyperbaric oxygen therapy practices by developing a research program and bringing wound care to additional LVHN locations throughout the region.
