Athlete of the Year 2022

Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute is hosting its ninth annual Athlete of the Year awards program on May 24 at 7 p.m. The show will be broadcast live on PBS39. Former Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles will speak during the event, providing inspiration to area student-athletes.

The Athlete of the Year event is the culminating celebration of the Athlete of the Week program, sponsored by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute. The 35-week program, featured in The Morning Call, gives the public an opportunity to vote from three male and three female student-athletes weekly. Each weekly male and female winner receive a $500 scholarship.

In addition to the weekly scholarships, Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute awards one female and one male Athlete of the Week winner with a $10,000 scholarship. This year’s winners will be announced live during the broadcast May 24. All weekly winners are eligible for the top prize, which is determined based on academics, community leadership and athletic accomplishments.

In addition to the Athlete of the Year winners, other non-monetary awards announced during the broadcast will include Comeback Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year, presented by The Morning Call, and the Community Support Award, presented by PBS39.

“Athlete of the Year is an important part of Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute’s sports medicine program. Over the last nine years, we have recognized over 400 student-athletes who have gone on to do amazing things, and we know that this year’s Athlete of the Week winners will be no different,” says Daniel Terpstra, DO, orthopedic surgeon, Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute.

The program is supported by PBS39 as the Premier Production Partner and The Morning Call as the Premier Media Partner.

“At Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, we understand the commitment and hard work it takes to succeed as a student-athlete, and we’re proud to celebrate the success of all of our Athlete of the Week winners,” says Gabriel Lewullis, MD, orthopedic surgeon, Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute.

Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute’s Athlete of the Year is the region’s largest scholarship program for student-athletes with nearly $400,000 in scholarships being awarded since it began in 2013.
