On Monday, May 12, more than 100 golfers teed off at Valley Country Club in Sugarloaf. Attendees and 18 sponsors, including PenTeleData, Hollis Cobb and George T. Schmidt Inc., raised more than $100,000 for the Hazleton Golf Classic to help cancer patients and their families in the Greater Hazleton Area.
Terry Purcell, Regional Chief Operating Officer, welcomed and thanked everyone for surpassing last year’s fundraising record. “We are thrilled to be back at Valley Country Club for our Third Annual Golf Classic to benefit the Hazleton community,” he said. “Your support helps patients cover non medical expenses, such as food and gas, so that they can focus on their health and recovery.” Purcell also emphasized how the annual outing is bringing awareness to vital cancer resources in the community.
Before the golfers hit the links, there was a special tribute to longtime Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) supporter and former Hazleton Classic golfer Bob Ehle as well as Tom Schmidt, former general contractor for LVHN and owner of Ace Sponsor George T. Schmidt Inc., who both recently passed from cancer. Bob’s family was in attendance and his nephew led a foursome for the event. Tom’s son, Steve, who took over the business from his father, was also present, leading a foursome of George T. Schmidt Inc. employees.
