Quality sleep isn’t just a time for your body to relax; it is an active, essential process for your central nervous system. The NIH recommends 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night for most adults, and missing out regularly increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, and dementia.
According to sleep medicine specialist Martina Vendrame, MD, PhD, sleep acts as a tuneup for your mind. During sleep, your brain activates the glymphatic system — a network of tiny channels that pumps cerebrospinal fluid through brain tissue to sweep away accumulated waste and toxins.
When you don’t sleep well over a sustained period of time, the following can begin to occur:
- Toxins build up. Chronic lack of sleep interrupts waste clearance, leaving the brain prone to inflammation and cognitive decline.
- Neurological glitches worsen. Sleep issues and neurological disorders create a feedback loop in which brain issues disturb sleep, and bad sleep worsens neurological symptoms (such as tremors or memory loss).
- Memory consolidation suffers. Sleep acts as a librarian, organizing short-term memories into long-term storage.
While most people need 7-9 hours of sleep to function at their best, scientists have discovered rare genes that allow “short sleepers” (who thrive on under 6 hours) to clear brain waste much more efficiently.
