Matthew Loecher, MD, is now providing genitourinary reconstruction services at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN). Dr. Loecher is the only clinician in our region who specializes in this type of reconstructive surgery that restores function and quality of life to people dealing with conditions of the genitourinary tract.

The genitourinary tract includes urinary and reproductive organs and structures.

“As the only clinician in this area who is fellowship trained and dedicated to this field, I’m able to help patients stay closer to home and keep all their care in network,” Dr. Loecher says. “Otherwise, they would need to travel to Philadelphia or even as far as New York City.”

Dr. Loecher received fellowship training in genitourinary reconstruction at Temple University. As a subspecialty, the field has grown tremendously over the past two decades, and especially in the last five years with the availability of this training.

Building relationships and improving quality of life

“Common conditions I treat would be any stricture or obstruction of the urinary system, stress incontinence, erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease and urinary diversions,” Dr. Loecher says. “Beyond medical treatments though, much of my work revolves around building relationships and talking openly about what patients really need to improve their quality of life.”

Urinary incontinence is a common symptom for many of these conditions, and while incontinence is manageable with adult diapers, tubes, stents or full catheters, genitourinary reconstruction allows patients to regain this functionality.

“Many people I see have symptoms related to the treatment of urologic cancers, complications from other urologic surgeries or congenital disorders that can radically change daily life,” Dr. Loecher says. “I want every patient to be educated about their condition and understand the options so we can make a treatment decision as a team.”

A team approach and leading-edge diagnostics

At LVHN, the urology department works as a team. Physician assistants are leaders in their field who perform in-office procedures and provide education. They offer prompt appointments and follow-up.

When needed, the team collaborates closely with specialists in urogynecology and colorectal surgery. They maintain relationships with pelvic floor physical therapists to enhance recovery and help relieve pain and discomfort.

Dr. Loecher also helps with transitional urology for children turning 18 who are under the care of a pediatrician or other specialist.

In-office video-urodynamics and fluoroscopy allow the team to provide real-time imaging and diagnosis in the office.

“Urology combines the medical and surgical management of all conditions, from the kidneys to the genitals. I go into detail with patients about the risks and rewards of a treatment plan for their specific condition,” Dr. Loecher says. “Urologic reconstruction is dynamic and constantly evolving, and I’m happy I can bring this level of care to our region.”
