Get to know Blake Weiss, DO, nephrology fellow.
LVHN offers a robust training environment with a broad spectrum of patient cases, state-of-the-art resources and a strong emphasis on clinical education.
What are your career goals?
My career goals are to combine clinical practice with education. I went to medical school in eastern Kentucky. There, I discovered my passion for nephrology. The Appalachian region faces some of the highest rates of chronic kidney disease and renal failure in the United States, highlighting a critical need for accessible health care. I am committed to making a meaningful impact by caring for this underserved population. Additionally, this path allows me to stay connected with my alma mater and contribute to the internal medicine residency program at the local hospital, fostering the next generation of physicians.
What is one memory you have from your training so far that will stick with you for your career?
It is an incredible opportunity to be able to care for patients alongside my sister, who also completed her medical training at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN). I vividly recall one night, we were the only two doctors covering the cardiac ICU, navigating critical cases as a team. It was a profound moment that highlighted our shared passion for medicine. Today, we continue to work together. She is a cardiology fellow, and I am a nephrology fellow. We are able to blend our specialties and provide exceptional patient care. LVHN is truly a family.
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone as they select a training program?
My advice is to choose a training program at a large institution where you will be exposed to a wide variety of pathologies. This provides invaluable learning opportunities and prepares you to handle complicated clinical scenarios. LVHN offers a robust training environment with a broad spectrum of patient cases, state-of-the-art resources and a strong emphasis on clinical education.
