Get to know Siraj Ahmed, MD, nephrology fellow.
Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) offers exposure to a diverse patient population having a wide range of pathologies. It provides a perfect balance of academic and clinical education, which is essential for learning and professional growth.
What is your career goal?
My career goal is to become a well-rounded nephrologist with expertise in managing complex kidney diseases, transplantation, and critical care nephrology. I am particularly interested in advancing patient-centered care and contributing to medical education. Through fellowship training, I hope to develop the clinical, academic, and leadership skills necessary to improve outcomes for patients with kidney disease while remaining engaged in teaching and mentorship.
What makes Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN)’s training program different from others across the country?
The strong balance of high patient volume and genuinely approachable faculty makes LVHN stand out. You get robust exposure to complex pathology, but you never feel isolated because the attendings and multidisciplinary team are always accessible, willing to teach, and invested in your growth.
What do you like most about living in the Lehigh Valley?
I really appreciate how family friendly and accessible the region is. The Lehigh Valley offers a great quality of life with fantastic parks, good schools, and a welcoming community feel, all while staying conveniently close to major metro areas.
What is one memory you have from your training so far that will stick with you for your career?
Sitting down with one of my attendings after a complex case to break down the fluid and electrolyte management step by step. The patience and enthusiasm they showed in teaching during a busy inpatient service day set a standard for how I want to mentor others in the future.
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone as they select a training program?
Look for a program where the culture is genuinely supportive. High-volume clinical training is essential, but being in an environment where your colleagues lift you up, value work-life balance, and encourage your professional autonomy makes all the difference in your fellowship journey.
What does it mean to be a fellow at LVHN?
Being a fellow at LVHN means being an integral, valued part of a patient-centered team. It means taking ownership of complex clinical care every day while knowing you have the complete support, resources, and mentorship of a dedicated health system behind you.
