Orthopedic Surgery Residency Research Opportunities and Publications

Many faculty members are involved in both quality and clinical research. 

All residents are required to perform a scholarly activity consisting of a research project of publishable quality. These projects take many forms, including clinical research, systematic literature reviews, surveys, qualitative research, and autoethnography.

Residents are allotted three research weeks per year in the PGY-2, PGY-3, and PGY-4 years and one week in the PGY-5 year. They can request that time at any point while at the home program, with approval of the service attending and program director. Residents are expected to outline a plan of activities for that time and will meet with the research adviser before and after to review their progress. This allows flexibility to work on research when conditions are optimal. The week in PGY-5 is intended to help with final preparation of a manuscript for submission for publication.
