A day in the life of a PGY-3 resident

I wake up at 7 a.m. to get to work by 8. I am usually out of the house by 7:20-ish and it takes me 20-30 minutes to get to work (outpatient clinic). It’s hit or miss on whether I grab coffee, and when I get in the office I check if someone brought in any treats in the break room. Then I will set up my notes for the day and take care of things in my inbox.

My day is split into 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4:30 p.m., where I see patients in hour blocks, typically three in the morning and 3-4 in the afternoon. We get lunch between 12-1 p.m. where my co-resident and I will likely grab a bite to eat near the office. Afterward, my co-residents and I go into group supervision (4-5 p.m.) with the attending we have been working with that day, where we can go over different topics or workflow questions.

I typically work on my notes throughout and right after visits so that I do not have to stay after to finish up notes and can leave. I will usually drive home, change clothes, and head to the basketball court for about an hour if the weather is OK for it. I typically head back home between 6-6:30 and then shower and start to prepare dinner.

My wife typically gets in between 7-7:30 p.m., and she will jump in with helping me finish dinner. We will eat together and chat about our day. I usually will spend time with my wife afterward, either just talking or watching a show/documentary. I usually close out my night by playing video games for a couple hours and head to bed around 11 p.m.
