At Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital, our region’s only pediatric neuropsychologist, Elona Moci, PhD, offers personalized evaluation for your child and will work with your family to develop recommendations for further care and support.

What is pediatric neuropsychology?

Pediatric neuropsychology involves evaluation and care for children affected by medical conditions that can interfere with:

  • General intellectual skills
  • Achievement abilities, such as reading and math
  • Executive skills, such as planning/organization, inhibition of impulses, problem solving and flexibility
  • Attention
  • Learning and memory
  • Language
  • Visual spatial skills
  • Motor coordination
  • Behavioral and emotional functioning
  • Social skills

We are here to support you and your child throughout every step of your journey.

Does my child qualify for a neuropsychological evaluation?

Dr. Moci sees children who have:

  • Difficulty with learning, attention, behavior, socialization or emotional control.
  • A brain injury from an accident, birth trauma or other physical stress.
  • A disease or inborn developmental problem that affects the brain in some way, including:
    • Autism spectrum disorders
    • Brain tumors
    • Childhood cancers
    • Stroke
    • Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI)/concussion
    • Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI)
    • Epilepsy
    • Genetic conditions
    • Metabolic conditions
    • Craniofacial disorders
    • Learning disorders
    • Psychiatric disorders

What does the evaluation process involve?

Once your child has been referred to the neuropsychology program by a pediatrician or specialist, an office coordinator will reach out to schedule an initial screening.

After the neuropsychologist has reviewed your child's screening, she will meet with you and your child to learn more about their symptoms as well as their medical and academic history. Your child will then be scheduled for a neurocognitive evaluation.

During this evaluation, Dr. Moci will personalize her approach to determine your child’s strengths and weaknesses regarding social cognition, intellectual capabilities and behavioral function. After the evaluation is complete, she will meet with you and your child to discuss the findings, including diagnosis (if applicable) and recommendations for supportive care and treatment. This may include a referral to physical, occupational or behavioral therapy or recommendations for support in academic settings.

Within two years of their initial evaluation, your child will have a follow-up appointment with the neuropsychology team to check in on their progress.
