LVH–Cedar Crest Receives ‘Top Teaching Hospital’ Designation for Quality and Patient Safety

Highlighting its nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality, Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Cedar Crest was named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group. The Leapfrog Group is a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers focused on health care safety and quality.

The Top Teaching Hospital designation is given to the highest performing hospitals on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. About 2,100 hospitals were considered for the award, and this year 56 teaching hospitals received the honor, including four Pennsylvania hospitals.

“We are pleased to recognize LVH–Cedar Crest as a 2019 Leapfrog Top Hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “This demonstrates extraordinary dedication to patients and to the Lehigh Valley community. We congratulate the board, staff, and clinicians whose efforts made this honor possible and know they share pride in this achievement.”

Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, practices for safer surgery, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology. Top Hospital awards are categorized into four groups, children’s hospitals, general hospitals, rural hospitals, and teaching hospitals.

“Providing safe, high-quality care is the foundation to everything we do, and it’s the level of care people expect and deserve,” says Matt McCambridge, MD, LVHN’s Chief Quality and Patient Safety Officer. “This designation is a result of the hard work of many people, and we’re proud to be nationally recognized for prioritizing patient safety.”

“The Top Hospital Award comes following LVH–Cedar Crest’s “A” Hospital Safety Grade from Leapfrog,” says Bill Kent, MHA, Senior Vice President of LVHN and President of LVH-Cedar Crest. “We are committed to being a health partner, and recognition like this is evidence that we deliver on that commitment.”
